Discover Card, offering credit card types ranging cash rewards, miles, business, prepaid, rewards, debit, and student cards, are issued by Discover Bank and transactions processed by the Discover Network payment network. Discover is considered the pioneer for credit card cash rewards with its "Cashback Bonus" program, one of the most popular cash reward programs to this day. Discover Bank is a subsidiary of Discover Financial Services, which also owns the payment processing businesses Pulse, a leading national ATM/debit network, as well as Diners Club International, which is accepted in more than 185 countries and territories.
Established in 1986, Discover Financial Services is one of the largest banking and payment companies in the U.S and the third largest national credit card brand.
Be careful of the terms fine print--that is, if you can find them. In its advertisement for this card, Discover uses many asterisks (*) behind the terms. One of troublesome terms is the intro balance transfer fee. The problem is, if you look for an asterisk in the footnotes of the offer on the Credit Karma page, it's not there. You must go to the Discover site where you will find the intro balance transfer rate is 4%. It seems that Discover could have simply listed that on the advertisement page instead of burying it in the fine print of terms in a separate browser. Most problematic of all, when I looked at my “see savings details” link, it left out the balance transfer fees showing it as a 0. But the fees in my case would have been $100s of dollars. The other tricky term is the $150 Restaurant.com coupon. According to the terms, to use it, you'll first have to wait the 8 weeks for them to mail it after you make your first purchase. Then once you get to the restaurant, it is only good for parties of 2 or more. On top of that, a minimum restaurant purchase is required. Yet neither Discover nor Restaturant.com disclose how much that is. I spent several minutes searching for the Discover Open Roads $150 offer on Restaurant.com, but couldn't find it. Instead, as I was searching their web site, I clicked the "partners" link--thinking that Discover would be a found there. It wasn't. Instead, it was a separate site for Restaurant.com's other customers, the restaurant owners. The logo read "Restaurant.com. Building profits one table at a time." Certainly. And part of those profits will come from Discover’s Open Roads customers who are trying to redeem these certificates with the difficult to find terms. I wonder if Discover is solely responsible for the content of this offer or perhaps Credit Karma listed it and accidentally omitted all of the terms.

Just approved for $2800 CL, although on a variation of this card: through 'Cardbuilder,' picked this card with no intro purchase, but 10.99% for 6 months on balance transfers. No 'Welcome Bonus,' but 15.99% APR and still no annual fee. CreditKarma score of 724, VantageScore of 708, 19-year-old full-time community college student. My second card.

Discover charges a 3% fee on balance transfers. Also, after their 12 month intro period, the interest rate goes up to a rate much higher than I had on the transferred balance.

For those looking for a great cashback card for Gasoline purchases in general. Try taking a look at Pentagon Federal Credit Union Rewards Visa. 5% cash back each month credited to your statement for gasoline purchases at the pump, then lesser cashback % for other purchases. One of the best out there right now I feel.

I think the community of opinions here has nailed it. This is not a great offer.

Rate too high, cash back offer too vague

deshi - You are reading it correctly. $5/month on gas/auto. Combine that with the recently changed terms increasing the minimum redemption for cash back to $50 from $20 and it will take you 10 months to get enough to redeem. Note that you can still redeem for gift cards starting at $20. Also, you do receive cash back for other purchases, but it starts at 0.25% for the first $3000 in annual purchases (not including any purchases that earn the 5%)

5% on first hundred bucks of gas... that will soon be one tank.... bad deal.

the terms actually states "Earn a full 5% Cashback Bonus on your first $100 in combined gas and auto maintenance purchases each billing period " that means max 5 bucks a month reward on gas purchases - am I reading it right?
